In 1979, Greenpeace received a call from US President Jimmy Carter applauding its efforts to save whales. It was at that moment that Canadian journalist Bob Hunter realised that the organisation he had co-founded in 1971 had come full circle, from an environmental fringe group to something much larger and with vast appeal. Hunter, who was a key member and shaper of the group's image, was Greenpeace’s first president, from 1973 to 1979. Style:
