EV-05-08: Underground

The Underground Railroad was a system of safe houses that allowed black Americans to escape the shackles of
slavery for the freedom of Canada.

Fugitive slaves were helped along the Underground Railroad by free blacks, whites, and native Americans who acted as "conductors" and helped guide them
to the safe houses.

Once in Canada the former slaves no longer needed to fear a government returning them to slavery, they were able to vote and even own land. There were still challenges to be faced, but at least they could be faced in freedom.
